I think it is fairly common in the south. In Alabama, most people went Auburn or Bama, and can contribute to a better friend or foe quickly. :)
The same happens in the Raleigh / Durham area, except that between UNC, NC State and Duke, and of course it's all about basketball.
Also, I think Tennessee would have something similar occurs because UT is the largest school, and they are mad about football, as we in Georgia
